Green Room: Culture, Geography & Weather

green-globeThis month students will be provided with the opportunity to learn about the culture, geography and weather of three different countries around the globe: France, Mexico and China.

Week 1: France

Week 1 in the Green Room will be focused on learning about the culture, geography and weather of France.

Week 1 Sub Theme Objectives

  1. Be familiar with the idea of a map and where on a map France can be found.
  2. Be familiar with French culture (i.e. music, education, sports, etc.), including a brief history of the country’s past as well as the weather its’ inhabitants experience.
  3. Be familiar with the topography of France.
  4. Be familiar with at least one landmark in France that is known world-wide.

Week 2: Mexico

Week 2 in the Green Room will be focused on learning about the culture, geography and weather of Mexico. Weeks 2, 3 and 4 will follow a similar format to that of Week 1.

  2. Be familiar with Mexico’s culture (i.e. music, education, sports, etc.), including a brief history of the country’s past as well as the weather its’ inhabitants experience.
  3. Be familiar with the topography of Mexico.
  4. Be familiar with at least one landmark in Mexico that is known world-wide.

Week 3: China

Week 3 in the Green Room will be focused on learning about the culture, geography and weather of China. Weeks 3 and 4 will follow a similar format to that of Weeks 1 and 2.

  2. Be familiar with China’s culture (i.e. music, education, sports, etc.), including a brief history of the country’s past as well as the weather its’ inhabitants experience.
  3. Be familiar with the topography of China.

Week 4: Thanksgiving

happy-thanksgivingDuring the last week of the month students in the Green room will be helping their classmates plan and prepare a Thanksgiving feast at the end of the week. During preparations, the culture of the United States will be discussed as well as individual, family traditions.

Learning Goals

The following learning goals will also be addressed in lessons throughout the month. These learning goals are designed to introduce students to Kindergarten and First-Grade-Level -Concepts in developmentally and age appropriate ways. Practice some or all of these concepts at home throughout the month to further your child’s comprehension of the concept!

A Child’s Place in Time & Space (1st grade level)

1.2.3 Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols

1.2.4 Describe how location, weather, and physical environment affect the way people live, including the effects on their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation.

Measurement & Geometry (level k):

1.4 Identify the time (to the nearest hour) of everyday events (e.g., lunch time is 12 o’clock; bedtime is 8 o’clock at night).

Recognition, Writing Numbers and Drawing Shapes:

The learning of numbers and shapes is worked into each and every lesson that students participate in in the Green Room. Teachers plan “Number and Shape Opportunities” so that students have ample time to practice number and shape recognition, number writing and shape drawing throughout the month.
