Red Room: Spice, Fruit & Vegetable Inspired Art

Carl-on-Lettuce-SeascapeThis month students will have the opportunity to become inspired by the cuisine of different cultures  and create art using the food from each region studied.  To do this, students will be learning about and examining the "foodscapes" of Carl Warner in hopes of replicating his style in masterpieces of their own!

Week 1: Art Inspired by French Cuisine

Week 1 will be focused on creating artwork inspired by French cuisine.

Week 1 Sub Theme Objectives:

  1. Be introduced to the photographer Carl Warner through his “food landscapes” and a brief biography.
  2. Be familiar with the types of food and spices typically used in French cuisine.
  3. Create works of art inspired by the food and spices used in French cuisine (i.e. using spices as glitter, painting a still-life of chopped carrots, building a 3D work of art using food, etc).
  4.  Have participated in creating a “Carl Warner Landscape” using the food and spices of Indian cuisine.

Week 2: Art Inspired by Mexican Cuisine

Week 2 will be focused on creating artwork that is inspired by Mexican cuisine.

Week 2 Sub Theme Objectives:

  1.  Be starting to become familiar with the photographer Carl Warner through his “food landscapes” and a brief biography.
  2. Be familiar with the types of food and spices typically used in Mexican cuisine.
  3. Create works of art inspired by the food and spices used in Mexican cuisine (i.e. using spices as glitter, painting a still-life of chopped carrots, building a 3D work of art using food, etc).
  4. Have participated in creating a “Carl Warner Landscape” using the food and spices of Thai cuisine.

Week 3: Art Inspired by Chinese Cuisine

Week 3 will be focused on creating artwork that is inspired by Chinese cuisine.

Week 3 Sub Theme Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with the photographer Carl Warner through his “food landscapes” and a brief biography.
  2. Be familiar with the types of food and spices typically used in Chinese cuisine.
  3. Create works of art inspired by the food and spices used in Chinese cuisine (i.e. using spices as glitter, painting a still-life of chopped carrots, building a 3D work of art using food, etc).
  4. Have participated in creating a “Carl Warner Landscape” using the food and spices of Greek cuisine.

Week 4: Thanksgiving

happy-thanksgivingDuring the last week of the month students in the Red room will be helping their classmates plan and prepare a Thanksgiving feast at the end of the week. During preparations, the culture of the United States will be discussed as well as individual, family traditions.

Learning Goals

The following learning goals will also be addressed in lessons throughout the month. These learning goals are designed to introduce students to Kindergarten and First-Grade-Level -Concepts in developmentally and age appropriate ways. Practice some or all of these concepts at home throughout the month to further your child’s comprehension of the concept!

Music (level K):

3.3 Use a personal vocabulary to describe voices and instruments from diverse cultures.

Visual Arts (level K):

1.2 Name art materials (e.g., clay, paint, and crayons) introduced in lessons 4.3 Discuss how and why they made a specific work of art 5.4 Discuss the various works of art that artists create and the type of media used.

Music of the Month: Cultural

The music this month is meant to play during “work times” in the Red Room. There is music from each country to help inspire students when they are working with the food from each region.

Color:

Recognition & Primary vs. Secondary Participating in learning opportunities for colors is an essential component of working in the Red Room. Students will be practicing their color recognition skills on a daily basis and have the opportunity to blend colors several times a month.
