Blue Room: Field Guides to the Biomes

This month students will be transformed into explorers of the biomes and ecosystems of the world.

Week 1: The Rain Forest

Week 1 in the Blue Room will be focused on the animals found in the Rain forest Biome. Students will be introduced to the animals through the book, The Field Guide to Rain Forest Animals. Your young explorers will be creating their own field journals to record their discovers and share their findings with you at home! By the end of the week students should have a basic understanding of the following Sub Theme Objectives.

Week 1 Sub Theme Objectives

  1. Have explored the Field Guide to Rainforest Animals, start to understand what a field guide is and what it is used for and have created a field guide for wildlife observations throughout the month.
  2. Be familiar with at least three animals that live in the Rainforest and the letters and sounds that the letters their names begin with make (i.e. “Parrot” begins with “P”).

Week 2: Animals of the Arctic Tundra

Week 2 will be taught in a similar fashion to week 1. Week 2 will be focused on the animals found in the Arctic Tundra Biome. Students will be introduced to the animals through the book The Field Guide to Polar Animals. As in week 1, this field guide will be introduced to students as something that was discovered by explorers at the ends of the Earth! Students will continue to use their own field guides to make observations and practice writing letters that coincide with the animal and alphabet discoveries made in the Blue Room. By the end of the week students should have a basic understanding of the following Sub Theme Objectives.

Week 2 Sub Theme Objectives

  2. Be familiar with at least three animals that live in the Arctic Tundra and the letters and sounds that the letters their names begin with make (i.e. “Arctic Fox” begins with “A” and “F”).

Week 3: Animals of the African Savanna

Week 3 will also be taught in a similar fashion to week 1. Week 3 will be focused on the animals found in the African Savanna Biome. Students will be introduced to the animals through the book The Field Guide to Safari Animals. Like in weeks 1 and 2, this field guide should be introduced to students as something that was discovered by explorers in exotic Africa! During week 3 students will continue to use their field guides to make observations and practice writing letters that coincide with the animal and alphabet discoveries made in the Blue Room. by the end of the week students should have a basic understanding of the following Sub Theme Objectives.

Week 3  Sub Theme Objectives

Week 4: Animals of the Ocean

The last week of the month will again follow the same format as weeks 1, 2 and 3. Week 4 will be focused on the animals found in the Ocean/Marine Biome. Students will be introduced to the animals through the book The Field Guide to Ocean Animals. As in previous weeks, this field guide will be introduced to students as something that was discovered by explorers of the Great Barrier Reef! By now your little ones should have a good understanding of what a field guide is and should be able to describe to you in detail its components and purpose!

Week 4 Sub Theme Objectives
