Red Room: Recycling & Conservation

This month the Red Room will become a haven for recycled materials. These materials will become the students’ inspiration for their own art and fashion masterpieces! Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of recyclables and be active participants in the planning of an Earth Day celebration!

Week 1: Intro to Recycling & Conservation

We begin week 1 with an introduction to conservation and recycling. We will be reading “Michael Recycle” and “The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle/Can” throughout the week so that students maintain interest and focus on the subject matter at hand. We also introduce the many natural resources that the Earth offers and which resources can be conserved. Our recycling efforts will also be moved to the Red Room to get students excited about these concepts. By the end of the week they should have a good understanding of what can be recycled and why it is important to do so. Students will also be learning about what recycled materials can be used for (i.e. art, fashion, paper goods, etc.).  Then they will have the opportunity later in the month to use recycled materials to become artists and fashion designers!

Week 1 Sub Theme Objectives

  1. Be familiar with the terms conservation and recycling.
  2. Be familiar with at least one of the Earth’s resources that can be conserved (i.e. water).
  3. Be familiar with different ways to recycle.Be able to identify sounds from a nature CD and know how one is created.

Week 2: Recycled Art

During week 2 we will turn your conservationists into artists! The inspiration for the types of art created during week 2 will come from images displayed in the classroom of recycled art and class discussions about recycling. When week 2 begins, we will display a variety of pictures of recycled art along with pictures of the artists who created them. These pictures will help guide students when they are attempting to create their very first recycled art masterpiece! Students are also encouraged to bring in examples of everyday things (i.e. cup, purse, vase, etc.) that can also be used as inspirations for their creations.

Week 2 Sub Theme Objectives

  1. Be familiar with the term Recycled Art and what types of materials are used to produce it.
  2. Be familiar with at least 2 artists who create art using recycled materials.
  3. Have created a three-dimensional piece of art using recycled materials.

Week 3: Recycled Fasion

During week 3 our students will become fashion designers! Using the recycled materials in the classroom, students will create clothing and accessories that they may even be able to actually wear and use! Designing clothing and accessories from recycled materials is a great learning process. Students will be able to use their journals to brainstorm and sketch their designs before actually creating them. Teachers will provide guidance while students are creating so that they are able to plan out a design that will be realistic for them to create.

Week 3 Sub Theme Objectives

  1. Be familiar with the term Recycled Fashion and what types of materials are used to produce it.
  2. Be familiar with at least 2 fashion designers who design clothing or accessories using recycled materials.
  3. Have participated in the creation of clothing or accessories using recycled materials.

Week 4: Earth Day Preparations

During week 4, we will be working with our students to plan an Earth Day celebration! The celebration will be for the entire school to enjoy. Throughout the week we will plan activities for Earth Day that are related to either conserving the Earth’s resources or recycling. We brainstorm with the class about what types of activities and games to provide for the celebration. Students will also be making posters and banners about Earth Day to display.

Week 4 Sub Theme Objectives

  1. Be familiar with the purpose of Earth Day and the date on which it occurs.
  2. Have participated in the planning of an Earth Day celebration for the school.

Learning Goals

Visual Arts:

2.1  Use lines, shapes, forms and colors to make patterns.

2.2  Demonstrate beginning skill in tools and processes such as the use of scissors, glue and paper in the creation of a three-dimensional product

2.3  Make a collage using cut or torn paper shapes and forms

Art: Recycled Fashion and Art

Instead of being focused on just one artist this month, the Red Room is focused on a type of art. Students will not only be exposed to recycled art and fashion, but the artists and designers who create it.

Music: “Sounds of the Earth” by David Sun

Music can be integrated into any lesson. “Sounds of the Earth” is great inspiration for any masterpiece the students might create! We will also discuss how a compilation of nature sounds is created so that students know that they are listening to actual sounds from specific biomes, not just some man-made noise!
