Green Room: Seasonal Changes

season-changeThe Green Room this month is focused on learning about the seasonal changes that occur in winter. We will explore these changes with our students throughout the month to give them a better understanding of the world around them.

Week 1: Animals and Trees

During the first week of the month we will be introducing students to the kinds of changes that occur to both animals and trees during the winter season. They will be building upon some knowledge already learned during the fall season. Students should remember some key words like: hibernation and migration. The book, “Animals in Winter” by Henrietta Bancroft and Richard G. Van Gelder will be used as a reference and visual aid to teach the changes in animals.

Week 1 Sub Theme Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with the concepts of hibernation and migration and understand what animals practice this behavior during the winter season and why.
  2. Be familiar with the concepts of deciduous and evergreen trees and why certain trees exhibit this behavior during the winter season.

Week 2: Weather

During the second week of the month we will be introducing students to the many different types of weather that occur during the winter. We will use the book, “Weather Words and What They Mean” by Gail Gibbons to introduce and reinforce the concept of weather and how drastically it can change throughout the winter season.

Week 2 Sub Theme Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with many of the different types of weather that can occur during the season of winter such as: storm, rain, snow, hail, lightening, clouds, and a freeze.
  2. Have had an opportunity to experience, in some way, at least 2 types of weather that occur during winter.

Week 3: The Phases of Water and the Water Cycle

During the third week of the month we will be introducing students to the phases of water (i.e. liquid, solid, gas) and the water cycle. We will start off the week teaching about the Water Cycle. The Water Cycle touches on almost every concept that you will be teaching this week. We will be using the story of “Drippy the Raindrop” to teach the water cycle.

Week 3 Sub Theme Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with and have a good understanding of the following concepts and terms: The Water Cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation.
  2. Be familiar with and understand the phases of water: solid, liquid, gas.

Learning Goals

Number Sense

1.1 Compare 2 or more sets of objects (up to 10 objects in each group) and identify which set is equal to, more than or less than the other

Physical Science

1B Students know water can be a liquid or a solid and can be made to change back and forth from one form to another.

1C Students know water left in an open container evaporates but water in a closed container does not

Numbers and Shapes

Numbers and shapes are taught through seamless integration into the curriculum. Students will be exposed to a variety of shapes and numbers throughout the month.
