Blue Room: Winter Stories

snowflakeThis month in the Blue Room we will be exploring some stories with our students that focus on the wonder and fun of the winter season!

 

 

Week 1: “When Winter Comes” by Nancy Van Laan

“When Winter Comes” is a short story about what happens to the leaves, flowers, caterpillars, birds, mice, deer and fish that surround the home of a young child and his family. The family together explores these questions and then finds their way back to the warmth of their home to end the day. There are several skills that we will be practicing and developing with your students throughout the month. These skills include Sequencing, Rhyming and the following Vocabulary Words: winter, leaves, snow, cold, mice, deer, ground.

Week 1 Sub Theme Objectives:

  1. Be familiar enough with the story, “When Winter Comes” to successfully sequence the events of the story.
  2. Have been introduced to and practiced the vocabulary words that accompany the story so that they may begin to recognize individual words by sight.
  3. Have practiced the art of rhyming throughout the week using examples from the book, “When Winter Comes.”

Week 2: “Snowballs” by Lois Ehlert

“Snowballs” is a short story about building a “family” of snow-people using items collected in a sack. At the end of story the “snow family” melts away. Week 2 in the Blue Room will follow a similar format to that of week 1. The skills that we will be practicing and developing with your students include Sequencing, Rhyming and the following Vocabulary Words: sack, snowball, dad, mom, baby, cat, dog.

  2. Have been introduced to and practiced the vocabulary words that accompany the story so that they may begin to recognize individual words by sight.

Week 3: “Snow” by Cynthia Rylant

The story, “Snow” is about the many types of snow that you can experience during the winter months. There is “snow that comes softly in the night,” fat snow, light snow and heavy snow. The story also explores the emotions that one feels when it snows and helps us to remember how beautiful the world is when it is under a blanket of snow. Week 3 in the Blue Room will follow a similar format to that of weeks 1 and 2.  The skills that we will be practicing and developing with your students include Sequencing and the following Vocabulary Words: snow, friend, flake, school, white, happy, boots, mitten, hill.

  1. Be familiar enough with the story, “Snow” to successfully sequence the events of the story.
  2. Have been introduced to and practiced the vocabulary words that accompany the story so that they may begin to recognize individual words by sight.
